Within Temptation – Enter (1997)
Enter is the debut studio album by Dutch symphonic metal/rock band Within Temptation, released by DSFA Records in 1997 (see 1997 in music). The album prominently features lead singer Sharon den Adel’s vocals as well as guitarist Robert Westerholt’s gruff death metal growls. Lex Vogelaar, founder of Orphanage, supplied the guitar parts for ‘Pearls Of Light’, as well as producing the album, and Orphanage vocalist George Oosthoek performed some of the growls on ‘Deep Within’. Abysmal Dawn – Programmed To Consume Review
Programmed To Consume finds Abysmal Dawn expanding and perfecting their sound. The crushing death metal is there, with pummeling blast beats and shredding guitars. They also infuse elements of thrash and black metal that increase the extremity and diversity of the music. The songs range from lighting fast traditional death metal to mid tempo tracks with a lot of groove and melody. There’s even some acoustic guitars and a song that’s slower and doomy.
Charles Elliot is the band’s vocalist, and he shows a wider range on this album as well. His death metal growls are sufficiently angry and brutal, and he also adds some menacing high pitched black metal scream and some evil whispered/spoken word vocals. Great musicianship, a lot of variety and excellent songwriting make Programmed To Consume a top notch death metal CD. The third full-length from this California band finds vocalist Tim Lambesis and drummer Jordan Mancino the only remaining ties to the band that made 2003’s Frail Words Collapse. Fans need not worry, though. The new recruits — guitarists Phil Sgrosso and Nick Hipa and bass player Clint Norris — have more than meshed with Lambesis and Mancino; they’ve helped make As I Lay Dying a stronger band. Read more
