Children Of Bodom – Hatebreeder (1999)

Hatebreeder is the second studio album by Finnish Melodic Death Metal band Children of Bodom. In it, the band explores a classically influenced sound, as well as a dark, black metal atmosphere evidenced by fast, tremolo picked riffs, blast-beats, and Alexi using a more black metal-oriented vocal approach (Alexi had joked that Hatebreeder was “too black metal for heavy metal fans and too heavy metal for black metal fans”). It also carries some influence from power metal, in the fast riffs and complex soloing style. This record contains concert favorites such as “Silent Night, Bodom Night” and “Downfall”. The keyboards show more presence on this album, with longer and more elaborate solos than in their previous work. The “Deluxe Edition” was released in 2005 with bonus material. Hatebreeder was also re-released in 2008. Read more

Samael – Rebellion [EP] (1995)

Not wanting to keep their fans waiting after Ceremony of Opposites, Samael releases Rebellion. Two new songs, three if you count the hidden track, two reworked versions and a cover comprise this EP. As an album, its not bad. As a step to see where Samael was going, its quite good.

Samael take their black metal sound and expand it on Rebellion. The older songs get a much needed shot in the arm with a darker sound. Rebellion, the song, sounds like it was dropped from Ceremony… record. Static Journey was a sign of thing to come in Samael’s future. A bit of industrial tossed into the metal mix. You should own this.

Ceremony of Opposites is the 1994 album by Swiss heavy metal band Samael.

It would be their first release with Century Media Records after leaving French label Osmose Productions. Although the band’s subject matter was similar to previous releases (references of Aleister Crowley, Satanism and Blasphemy), it also showed their first signs of interest in industrial music, a direction that they would take on future albums.

It was produced by Waldemar Sorychta, who also worked on recordings by Lacuna Coil, Tiamat, Moonspell and others.

In 2005, the album was re-issued with their 1995 Rebellion EP.
